Frequently asked questions

Ethanol fire pits don't require a chimney or flue. EcoSmart Fire ethanol models need no permanent fixtures for ventilation, unlike traditional wood-burning fire pits. However, they do require adequate room ventilation and must meet minimum room size requirements for safe indoor operation.

e-NRG Bioethanol is the best fuel for EcoSmart Fire ethanol fire pits because it produces a bright, consistent orange flame while burning cleanly with no smoke, ash, or soot.

Not all bioethanol is equal. Purity matters significantly. Higher-purity bioethanol at 96–97% alcohol content delivers the vivid flame quality EcoSmart Fire products are engineered for. Lower-purity alternatives produce dimmer, inconsistent flames and can degrade burner performance over time.

Bioethanol requires no gas line, chimney, or flue installation, giving you complete placement freedom. A single litre burns for 1–2 hours depending on your burner size, and bioethanol stores safely for up to 3 years in a sealed container at room temperature.

The fuel itself contains nothing but denatured ethanol derived from fermented plant sugars. As it burns, it releases only heat, water vapour, and carbon dioxide, meeting safety standards for ventless indoor fireplace use. When choosing fire pit fuel, selecting the right quality ensures reliable performance and that signature clean flame.

Yes, EcoSmart Fire ethanol fire pits are safe for indoor use when properly sized for the room. Certain models in our range are explicitly rated for indoor or outdoor installation and carry international safety certifications including UL 1370 (USA), EN 16647 BSI (Europe and UK), and ACCC compliance (Australia). Not all models are indoor-rated; some are designed for outdoor use only, so confirming your chosen model's rating before installation is essential.

Safety depends on matching the burner size to your room volume. As a reference, the AB3 burner requires a minimum room volume of 40 m³ [1,413 ft³], while the AB8 burner needs 116 m³ [4,097 ft³]. These specifications ensure adequate oxygen replenishment during combustion.

The design itself incorporates active safety features: manual shut-off mechanisms, certified tempered-glass windscreens, and flame arrestor spouts on e-NRG bioethanol fuel bottles. The zero-clearance burner design means the appliance can sit adjacent to combustible materials including timber framing, as the engineering handles thermal output without requiring insulation. Always use approved e-NRG bioethanol fuel and follow the manufacturer's installation and operation guidelines for your specific model.

Non-combustible flooring materials, including concrete, stone, tiles, steel, and fire-rated materials, provide the maximum safety margin under indoor bioethanol fire pits. These surfaces eliminate the risk of direct heat transfer and ensure stable installation.

The essential safety requirement is a minimum 12.5 mm [0.5 in] air gap between the fire pit's underside and the floor. EcoSmart Fire products feature 360° articulating feet that maintain this airflow gap and allow level installation on any surface type, even if your floor isn't perfectly even.

Combustible surfaces like hardwood are possible if you maintain the prescribed clearances to flammable materials and ensure proper ventilation; non-combustible options remove this complexity entirely. For embedded burner installations (built into custom cabinetry or fireplaces), only non-combustible materials are permitted for the surround.

Beyond safety, your flooring choice influences the visual integration of your fire pit. Stone and polished concrete complement contemporary and minimalist interiors; natural slate works with organic design schemes. The material you select becomes part of the focal point's design story, not just its foundation.

Fire restrictions typically apply to wood-burning fire pits, but ethanol and gas fire pits may have different regulations depending on your location. Always check with local fire authorities before using any outdoor fire pit during restriction periods, as rules vary by jurisdiction and fire danger levels.

Outdoor fire pits should be positioned a minimum of 2 metres (6.5 feet) away from trees and other items susceptible to movement from wind. This clearance prevents flames from reaching overhanging branches and reduces fire risk from wind-blown debris or tree movement.

EcoSmart Fire ethanol fire pits produce no smoke when burning quality e-NRG bioethanol. Bioethanol combustion is complete, releasing only heat, water vapour, and carbon dioxide; the flame remains beautifully clean, with no ash, soot, or grey residue.

Odour perception is minimal and fuel-quality dependent. A brief, faint scent may occur at the moment of ignition or during extinguishing, a normal reaction similar to blowing out candles, but it dissipates quickly in outdoor air. Using premium e-NRG bioethanol minimises this further and ensures a pure, clean-burning experience.

If you notice abnormal smoke or an unpleasant odour, the cause is typically one of three things: non-approved fuel (anything other than e-NRG bioethanol), burner contamination from debris, or an obstruction near the flame. Turn off the burner, allow it to cool, clean the burner thoroughly, and remove any blockages.

Bioethanol burns the cleanest in fire pits, producing no smoke, ash, or particulate residue because it combusts completely into only heat, water vapour, and carbon dioxide.

Unlike wood, which releases smoke and particulates into the air, or gas, which produces nitrogen oxides and some soot under incomplete combustion, bioethanol's simple chemical structure supports complete combustion. Combustion is complete, leaving no ash, soot, or carbon residue. This is why bioethanol fire pits need no chimney or external venting; there is only moisture and CO₂ to exhaust.

Bioethanol's environmental credentials are equally compelling. Derived from fermented agricultural sugars, it is a renewable crop-based fuel rather than a fossil fuel. Its renewable origin and complete combustion make it significantly more sustainable than traditional alternatives, with no ongoing contribution of fossil carbon to the atmosphere.

EcoSmart Fire fire pits use premium-grade bioethanol, formulated to high purity standards for reliable, consistent combustion. No smoke, no soot marks on walls, no mess, just pure ambience.

Yes, EcoSmart bioethanol fire pits are designed for placement on wooden decks and other combustible surfaces, with EcoSmart Fire confirming their suitability for this application.

Bioethanol's zero-spark, zero-ember combustion is the key advantage for deck use. Unlike wood or gas fires that shed embers, bioethanol produces only heat and water vapour, removing the primary ignition risk that concerns most deck owners. Non-removable articulating feet maintain a 12.5 mm [0.5 in] minimum air gap between the appliance base and the deck surface, allowing airflow and heat dissipation beneath the unit.

For safe placement, follow these clearances:

Lateral: 600 mm [23.6 in] minimum from the flames to any fixed furniture or structures
Overhead: 2,000 mm [78.7 in] minimum above the flames from moveable items (tree branches, overhangs, umbrellas)
Surface: The deck must be hard, flat, and stable

Keep flammable materials at least 1 metre away, do not leave the fire unattended, and allow the burner to cool completely before refuelling. No deck sealant or protective barrier is required; the built-in air gap handles the engineering.

EcoSmart Fire bioethanol fire pits require minimal maintenance, typically after every 50 litres of fuel use or when black deposits appear near the burner opening.

Wait at least 15 minutes after extinguishing before cleaning; the burner must be completely cool, empty, and dry for safety. Remove the burner and wash it in hot soapy water. Most EcoSmart Fire burners are dishwasher-safe (face down, lid open or removed). Vacuum exterior surfaces and gently brush any carbon deposits toward the interior, then vacuum again. Avoid steel wool or abrasive sponges, which damage stainless steel.

For the steel surfaces, apply stainless steel cleaner or metal polish with a clean cloth, working in the direction of the grain; test on a small area first. Finish with a warm soapy water rinse, dry thoroughly with a clean cloth, and apply a stainless steel wipe. For glass screens, use glass cleaner only.

Between seasons, cover your fire pit when not in use and ensure the surface is completely dry first; moisture trapped under a cover invites rust and corrosion. This preventative care keeps your fire pit performing beautifully for years.
