Frequently asked questions

Yes, EcoSmart Fire offers designer fireplace ranges explicitly suited to apartment and small-space living. Compact freestanding models combine sculptural form with bioethanol technology, requiring no gas connections, chimneys, or flues, so you're free to place them where they make the strongest design impact, regardless of your building's infrastructure.

This means renters can add luxury focal points without permanent installation, and homeowners can position fireplaces as movable design statements that work with evolving interiors.

Most models need just 600 mm [23.6 in] minimum side clearance and 2,000 mm [78.7 in] overhead clearance, fitting seamlessly into tighter floor plans. Smaller burners output 2–4 kW of heat and deliver 7–11 hour burn times, producing only heat, water vapour, and CO2 with no smoke, ash, or soot to compromise your finishes.

Over 90% thermal efficiency means all heat stays in the room, making these fireplaces genuinely functional beyond their visual presence.

Choosing the right EcoSmart Fire bioethanol fireplace comes down to matching your interior aesthetic to one of five distinct design directions. Each range carries its own visual signature and material language, so you can find the one that feels authentic to your space.

Minimalist-contemporary interiors work beautifully with expansive glass panels and slim stainless steel frames that create visual lightness and let the flame become the sculptural element. Industrial-modern and glam spaces favour sculptural lamp-like forms, often finished in marble with brushed brass accents that catch light and add warmth to harder materials. Retro-contemporary spaces embrace bold, cylindrical geometry in vibrant accent colours: saturated black, white, or warm tones that become confident focal statements. Classic-elegant interiors pair well with tealight-inspired glass surrounds and warm material finishes, equally at home in traditional entertaining spaces or transitional settings. Futuristic aesthetics gravitate to the 360-degree flame experience, where the fire performs from multiple viewpoints and black powder-coated steel grounds the sculptural effect.

All designer fireplaces are freestanding, so placement flexibility means you are not constrained by existing architecture. Browse the full range and test how each aesthetic sits in your space before deciding.

Yes, EcoSmart Fire designer fireplaces prove that function and aesthetic design are entirely compatible; in fact, the technology actively enables sophisticated form. Bioethanol burning produces only heat, steam and carbon dioxide, meaning no smoke or ash stains marble, real oak veneer, or concrete surfaces. This clean combustion frees designers to specify luxury materials that would be compromised by a traditional fireplace.

The range demonstrates this across every detail. Stone-finished units pair Italian Carrara or Turkish Nero Portoro marble with brushed brass accents, materials selected precisely because they'll remain pristine. 360-degree orbital designs let the flame become the sculptural centrepiece, visible from multiple angles. Slimline profiles disappear into cabinetry, delivering an almost-invisible function with a striking visual presence.

Bespoke design extends beyond materials. Grade 304 stainless steel, toughened glass, and 11+ colour options integrate into contemporary or traditional interiors without compromise. There's no flue to dictate placement or cut through sightlines. The fireplace delivers genuine warmth while serving as the room's defining focal point: performance and presence, without trade-offs.

EcoSmart Fire has received numerous industry awards recognising its bespoke design approach, spanning innovation and performance across multiple product ranges. The Stix Fire Pit, designed by Hiroshi Tsunoda, earned the Good Design Award at the 2011 Australian International Design Awards, alongside DesignEx Best New Product and the IIDA/HD Award for Excellence. The XL Series Ethanol Burners received the Hearth & Home Vesta Award in 2009, whilst the Flex Series gained recognition with the Attendees Choice Award (2018) and BIMsmith Best Award (2020).

Beyond individual product recognition, EcoSmart Fire's design credibility is reinforced through global specification: over 150,000 installations across 75+ countries, including placements in Four Seasons, Marriott, Hilton, W Hotels, and MGM Grand properties. This portfolio demonstrates that architects, interior designers, and luxury hospitality groups consistently choose these fireplaces for their design integrity and performance reliability.

The brand's partnership with designer Hiroshi Tsunoda underscores its commitment to bespoke, design-forward solutions. Over 300 EcoSmart Fire products have gained recognition for design and innovation, establishing the range as a trusted choice for discerning professionals.

Yes, EcoSmart Fire bioethanol fireplaces are freestanding pieces designed to move between rooms without any permanent installation or building work.

Because each fireplace is completely self-contained, with no gas lines, no electrical connections, and no flues, you can relocate one to any room that meets the minimum size requirements and has the necessary clearances. The process is straightforward: ensure the new room has at least 40 cubic metres [1,412 cubic ft] of space (larger burners require 70 cubic metres [2,472 cubic ft]); maintain 1,500 mm [59.1 in] distance from curtains and flammable materials and 600 mm [23.6 in] from fixed furniture; and consider the fireplace's weight before moving.

The deep-drawn fuel tanks and weighted bases are engineered for stability during repositioning, and anti-tip brackets keep the piece secure once placed. Simply refill the burner, light, and enjoy. No contractor visits, no room modifications.

A designer fireplace is a sculptural bioethanol fire conceived as a design object rather than a utilitarian heating appliance. EcoSmart Fire's designer range spans freestanding forms built around named design concepts (tealight-inspired, floor-lamp, retro cylindrical, glass-and-steel architectural) and finished in materials including Grade 304 stainless steel, Italian Carrara marble, borosilicate glass, and real oak veneer.

Three qualities define the category:

It functions as the centrepiece of a room without needing to be fitted into a wall or structure.
No flue, chimney, gas line, or electrical connection is required, giving designers freedom to place the piece wherever the composition demands.
EcoSmart Fire products are tested and certified to international standards including UL 1370, EN 16647, and Australian ACCC requirements.

Designer fireplace furniture clearances follow three straightforward distances for safe, confident placement: 1,500 mm [59 in] from curtains and other flammable soft furnishings, 600 mm [23.6 in] from fixed furniture like sofas and joinery, and 2,000 mm [78.7 in] of overhead space above the flame for anything movable, such as artwork or a TV shelf.

Room volume matters as much as the tape measure. EcoSmart Fire bioethanol burners are matched to the space they sit in, so a compact AB3 burner suits rooms from 40 m³ [1,413 ft³], a BK5 from 70 m³ [2,472 ft³], and a larger AB8 from 116 m³ [4,097 ft³]. Matching the burner to the room keeps combustion efficient and the air fresh.

Non-combustible surrounds, such as stone, steel or concrete, give the most design flexibility right up to the firebox line. Treat the figures above as planning anchors for sofas, rugs, shelving and wall finishes, then brief your installer early so joinery, curtains and lighting sit inside those distances from day one.

Designer ethanol fireplaces like EcoSmart Fire require no flue, chimney, or gas connection, freeing them from the structural constraints that anchor traditional fireplaces in place.

Traditional wood and flued gas fireplaces are fixed by their infrastructure: chimneys, gas lines, structural reinforcement, and combustion-air planning. An EcoSmart Fire bioethanol fireplace arrives as a finished piece that can be placed in apartments, island positions, room dividers, outdoor settings, and other locations a masonry hearth cannot reach.

The operational differences are equally direct:

Clean combustion. Burning e-NRG bioethanol produces a real orange flame with no smoke, soot, or ash, only heat, steam, and a small amount of CO2.
Heat retention. Without a flue drawing warm air out of the room, more heat stays in the living space rather than escaping upward through a chimney.
Minimal upkeep. An occasional wipe replaces ash removal, chimney sweeping, and annual gas inspections. Refuelling is done by hand from a jerry can.

The result is a fire feature that behaves like furniture: specified for how it looks, where it sits, and the moment it creates, rather than where the building will let it go.

An EcoSmart Fire bespoke designer fireplace requires a minimum 600 mm [23.6 in] of side clearance and 2,000 mm [78.7 in] of overhead clearance from the flame. These engineered clearances protect against heat transfer to adjacent surfaces and ensure proper airflow.

The full clearance set covers: 600 mm each side, 2,000 mm overhead for moveable appliances, 1,500 mm overhead for burner-only indoor installations, a 12.5 mm air gap beneath the appliance, and 40 mm below the glass opening. All surrounding surfaces must be non-combustible: steel, concrete, brick, or natural stone.

The required space also shapes the design outcome. These clearances frame the fireplace as a sculptural focal point, turning safety requirements into design planning dimensions. Ventless fireplaces must remain open at all times - do not enclose the burner in a sealed cavity.

EcoSmart Fire's installation documentation provides model-specific guidance for each configuration.
